The ultimate responsibility to conduct a safe flight rests with the captain. The captain should therefore be given adequate tools, information and guidelines. This position paper addresses these topics.

Visie Security Checkpoint

Crosswind

Position paper

Issue This position paper deals with the hazards in crosswind operation and stipulates the point of view of VNV in addressing these hazards. Wind is in essence a stochastic phenomenon and can therefore not be described or dealt with in an exact manner. Wind and all associated characteristics as crosswind and tailwind, shear, turbulence, vortices and gusts are of mere importance in our daily flight execution. Wind influences not only the aircraft’s performance but also the aircraft handling characteristics and piloting task. Some specific operational hazards are introduced.

Veiligheid

Background According to the NLR Air Transport Safety Institute runway excursions of commercial aircraft during the period 1997 – 2005 is ranking second in the top ten of accident categories, with a contribution of almost 12% [1]. The risk of a runway excursion on a slippery (non-dry) runway increases 8 to 10 fold. This clearly shows the need for accurate reporting mechanisms of runway slipperiness and adequate maintenance standards.

Thomas Bos Introduction Data gathered by the Dutch Aerospace Laboratory NLR and the Flight Safety Foundation indicates that runway excursions are one of the most important threats to aviation safety today. According to the Flight Safety Foundation 94% of the casualties in 2008 occurred in runway excursion accidents. The current situation produces on average more than one runway excursion per week worldwide. Lessons Learned

Issue Software based takeoff performance tools together with the use of digital performance information allow for the optimisation of takeoff performance by using first principles calculation methods, optimum flap settings and optimised takeoff speeds and may result in the removal of (additional) margins present in a paper based methodology.
